Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate, it is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols used in speech.

With Makaton, children and adults can communicate using signs and symbols. Many people then drop the signs and symbols naturally at their own pace, as they develop speech.

The Use of Makaton

At Castle Hill School we recognise the importance of the teaching of our school Community Languages, as it forms part of our policy of ‘Total Communication’ in which we communicate in the child’s own language. For some pupils at Castle Hill this includes Makaton.

Makaton is also used in classes to support the schools’ core vocabulary and the key words from the term’s topic.

In addition to teaching the core signs, Castle Hill School also recognises the benefits of participating in regular sign and sing opportunities. The pupils benefit from the opportunity to interact with each other, further develop their communication skills and celebrate their progress.
